ECT* Transnational Access under EURONS

ECT* is an infrastructure supported by the European Community through the contract EURONS for the period January 1st 2005 - December 31st 2007.

The European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT*) offers a number of activities for established and young researchers, theoretical and experimental physicists and nationals from all over the world (users). The scientific projects are carried out under the responsibilities of the Scientific Board (Selection Panel) and with daily supervision of the Director, Jean-Paul Blaizot (Project Manager). The Centre is based in Villazzano (Trento, Italy) in a property called Villa Tambosi. It offers ample office space and conference rooms, different meeting rooms, a library and a canteen. Furthermore the Centre is equipped with computing and networking facilities, able to serve a wide range of needs.

Any ECT* activity is open to all qualifying users (also called participants), but is however limited by the capacity of the Centre and goes through a selection procedure.

Projects carried out at ECT* can take the form of dedicated workshops and associated collaboration meetings. The role of the projects is to enhance discussions among smaller groups of workshop participants in order to stimulate new endeavours and collaborations.

From partial to full financial support towards food and lodging, and occasionally, towards travel expenses is available. If you like to submit a project proposal please go to Making a proposal for a project at ECT* .

The selection procedure

  1. The Scientific Board, which acts as user selection panel, has 3 meetings a year (usually January, June, October), during which it carries out the selection of the projects and the project group leaders.

  2. Time schedule:

    • January meeting of year n: definition of major research themes and possible projects for year n+1 followed by a call for proposals announced on the ECT* web page.
    • June meeting: first selection of projects.
    • October meeting: the Board finalises the full programme of activities of year n+1.
    • The selection of users is carried out on a continuous basis.

  3. Selection criteria:

    • Scientific quality
    • Timely features and forefront subjects; topicality
    • Balance between theoretical and experimental physics; link to major experimental programmes
    • Relationship with other/related fields; interdisciplinarity
    • Professional status of project leader and organisational skills
    • Balance between nationalities and senior/junior participants and less-favoured areas

The different projects, once approved by the Board, are announced on the web, and by the distribution of posters to the ECT*Associates and to research institutes world-wide. For approved projects the Board selects users (participants) together with the project leader.
